Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub

PROJECT: Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub

CLIENT: Transgrid

LOCATION: New South Wales

YEAR(S): 2024-2025

SCOPE: To design, manufacture and deliver 500kV Arteche Inductive Voltage Transformers and Capacitive Voltage Transformers

BACKGROUND:
The Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (MREH) is a landmark battery energy storage project located in Plumpton, Victoria. Developed by Equis Australia in partnership with the Victorian Government’s State Electricity Commission (SEC), the hub will deliver 1.6 GWh of energy storage, enough to power over 200,000 homes during peak evening demand.

Transgrid, through its commercial arm Lumea, is responsible for the design and construction of the 500kV substation and transmission infrastructure, including a 1.75 km underground cable linking the hub to the Sydenham Terminal Station. This marks Australia’s first 500kV battery connection, a critical step in enabling high-capacity renewable energy integration into the National Electricity Market (NEM).

To support this infrastructure, GFF Power/Arteche were contracted to supply 500kV Inductive Voltage Transformers and Capacitive Voltage Transformers, tailored to meet Transgrid’s technical and operational requirements. The instrument transformers are designed for high-voltage applications and include advanced insulation and monitoring systems to ensure long-term reliability under dynamic grid conditions.

SERVICES PROVIDED:

  • Design, manufacture and supply of Arteche inductive voltage transformers and capacitive voltage transformers.
  • Ongoing project management, including provision of regular updates relating to anticipated delivery timeline.
  • Complete logistical assistance covering international freight, port clearance and delivery to site, including unloading.
  • Technical support as required by Transgrid throughout the project.

OUTCOMES:
All equipment was manufactured to Transgrid’s specifications, produced in-line with the agreed schedule, and safely delivered to site per the project required timelines.
