PROJECT: Meadowbank Zone Substation Upgrade
CLIENT: Ausgrid
LOCATION: New South Wales
YEAR(S): 2018-2021
SCOPE: To design, manufacture and supply retrofit vacuum circuit breakers to replace legacy 11kV bulk oil circuit breakers
BACKGROUND: Meadowbank Zone Substation was constructed in the 1980s, utilising 11kV Brush Switchgear (Hawker Siddeley) panels and bulk-oil insulated circuit breakers
Due to a combination of concerns relating to the age and existence of flammable materials (oil), Ausgrid sought submissions from the market to replace the bulk-oil circuit breakers with modern vacuum retrofits. Given its partnership with UK-based 11kV retrofit specialist PBSI Group, GFF Power were chosen to undertake the project, including the development of a 2000A spring-charged circuit breaker.
SERVICES PROVIDED
- Conducted a site-based laser scan of the OEM circuit breakers and panels to confirm exact requirements.
- Analysis of scan data followed by development of site-specific designs tailored to integrate into existing panels.
- Development of 2000A spring-charged model, including successful type tests in external laboratory
- Manufacture and test 11kV vacuum circuit breakers, in-line with agreed technical specifications.
- Ongoing project management, including provision of regular updates relating to anticipated delivery timeline.
- Complete logistical assistance covering international freight, port clearance and delivery to site.
- Technical support as required by Ausgrid throughout the project.
OUTCOMES:
All equipment was produced to Ausgrid’s specifications and have successfully been integrated into the existing panels, reducing the risk to Ausgrid’s network and overall maintenance requirements.
